Vijay Menon

I live in Cochin in Kerala state, lying in the southern tip of India. My family consists of my wife and two children (daughter and son). I am an engineer working as a senior level company executive in manufacturing. My hobbies include the 3 Ms: movies, music and MOOCs. Since I have a passion for teaching, I thought being a mentor was the right opportunity for me to give something in return for what Coursera has given me and also gain the great satisfaction of serving a global community of learners.

What was your first Coursera course, how did you find out about it and why did you decide to take it?

My first course was Computer Networks taught by Prof David Weatherall (University of Washington) on Coursera’s old platform. I came to know about Coursera through my brother who works in the IT field. I decided to take this course since I was asked to head the IT function after being the project coordinator for ERP implementation in my company. That made it necessary for me to gain knowledge in computer networking and doing this course helped me a lot. I was also invited to be a Community TA for the course which further helped me in gaining mastery over the material.

What’s your favorite Coursera course and why?

My favorite course is the Business Strategy Specialization offered by professors Michael Lenox and Jared Harris (University of Virginia). The course gave me a lot of insight on how to evaluate the competitive position of a business organization and develop sound business strategies for growth; very useful skills for business executives indeed. The high quality course content, the case studies, the great instructors, and the challenging quizzes and assignments makes this course one of the best.

What do you enjoy most about mentoring?

(i) The great satisfaction I get when I interact with a global community of learners from diverse backgrounds and when they say that my posts were helpful to them and thank me. The only asset that you gain as you give is knowledge.

(ii) The new knowledge I gain when learners from various professions ask thought provoking questions which even forces me to refer to external materials.

(iii) The deeper insights on the learning material that you gain out of serving as a mentor over an extended period of time. The material gets hard-coded in your brain.

What does Coursera/Mentor community mean to you?

Coursera community is a friendly global learning community that is growing rapidly. As time passes, I have no doubt that this community is going to have a tremendous positive impact on the world in every sphere of human activity. Apart from the mentor community, I also belong to the Coursera beta tester community. In my mind, life long learning and interacting with other learners is the prescription to being youthful and making your life sublime.
