I feel good about being able to give people who don’t speak English the opportunity to learn things which they would never be able to get in another way. For me, this is a way of sharing with the rest of the world the education I’ve received.
Our translator spotlight this week is on Cassia Moreira Lopes, a Portuguese (Brazilian) Translator for the Global Translator Community (GTC).
Please introduce yourself
My name is Cassia Moreira Lopes and I am from São Paulo, Brazil. I am a military dentist and I have been in the GTC for almost 3 years.
What courses have you helped translate and what have you learnt so far?
I have translated Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligence offered by Case Western Reserve University and Introduction to Human Physiology by Duke University. And I have learned so much out of this fun experience.
First of all, I have learnt a lot of different words related to the specific subjects which I have translated.
Second, I feel very proud of my results – I managed to translate a large number of videos in a short period of time.
When I received the badge recognizing translators who’ve translated more than 15,000 words, I shared it with all my family and all my friends!
In addition, I personally feel good about being able to give people who don’t speak English the opportunity to learn things which they would never be able to get in another way. For me, this is a way of sharing with the rest of the world the education I’ve received.
What are your best practices for translating?
I prefer doing translations using my free time at home, usually in the evenings. I would search the terminologies in relevant websites first before starting to translate.
What was a memorable experience in interacting with other GTC translators?
I exchange a lot of information with other members of the Portuguese community and I feel really grateful for all the support the Portuguese Language Coordinators (LCs) have provided to me. I’m especially thankful for Denise Zornoff, one of the LCs for our community, who always responds to all our emails in a timely manner. When we had a problem with the platform, she helped solve the problem and keep us up to date with all the news. She is great!
The forum among translators is also an important channel for us to share doubts and solutions. We share with each other translation tips and discuss all sorts of problems. We also have a community-wide style guide where we can make sure translations are consistent across all videos in a course.
The GTC gives me an amazing sensation of being part of a group and has had a positive impact on so many lives, bringing knowledge to people.
What do you want people to know about the work that the GTC does?
My aim is to help people who don’t speak English to have the opportunity to learn from wonderful courses taught by top professors. It is very gratifying to help people around the world. It’s amazing to see that anyone with internet access can reach information from the most prestigious universities in world, freely, in their own language.
I hope more learners can join us, and together, we can make the world a better place.
